چکیده

We propose and analyze a goal-oriented a posteriori error estimator for the atomisticcontinuum modeling error in the quasicontinuum method. Based on this error estimator, we develop an algorithm which adaptively determines the atomistic and continuum regions to compute a quantity of interest to within a given tolerance. We apply the algorithm to the computation of the structure of a crystallographic defect described by a Frenkel-Kontorova model and present the results of numerical experiments. The numerical results show that our method gives an efficient estimate of the error and that our atomistic-continuum adaptivity algorithm computes the quantity of interest to within a given tolerance with a nearly minimal atomistic region.

A Continuum Model For Stone-wales Defected Carbon Nanotubes

In this paper, a continuum model is proposed so that a Stone-Wales (SW) defected carbon nanotube (CNT) is replaced by an initial circumferential crack in a continuum cylindrical shell. For this purpose, the critical energy release rate and then the fracture toughness of a defected CNT are calculated using the results of an existing atomistic-based continuum finite element simulation. Finally, t...

Atomistic-to-continuum coupling based on goal-oriented adaptivity and quasi-continuum approximation

It has long been understood that some of the key characteristics of materials, like grain boundaries, dislocation cores, and crack tips cannot be modeled realistically within the framework of continuum mechanics. It is believed that defects and surface effects play important roles at small scales, where the continuum assumptions are violated. Therefore, further information on a material at its ...

Error estimation and model adaptation for a stochastic-deterministic coupling method based on the Arlequin framework

The paper deals with the issue of accuracy for multiscale methods applied to solve stochastic problems. It more precisely focuses on the control of a coupling, performed using the Arlequin framework, between a deterministic continuum model and a stochastic continuum one. Using residual-type estimates and adjoint-based techniques, a strategy for goal-oriented error estimation is presented for th...

Fitting Effective Diffusion Models to Data Associated with a "Glassy" Potential: Estimation, Classical Inference Procedures, and Some Heuristics

A variety of researchers [15, 22, 27, 29, 31, 33] have successfully obtained the parameters of low-dimensional diffusion models using the data that comes out of atomistic simulations. This naturally raises a variety of questions about efficient estimation, goodness-of-fit tests, and confidence interval estimation. The first part of this article uses maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) to obtain...
